Rangoon Gets Off To A Dismal Start, Collects Rs 6.07 Crore On Day 1

Looks like the audience failed to warm up to the Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon. The first day collections of the film at the box-office are in and things are not looking good for the Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor starrer at the moment.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the Day 1 figures and said, “#Rangoon has a dismal start... Fri ₹ 6.07 cr. India biz... Will need to show massive growth on Sat + Sun to sustain and survive (sic).

The collections come as a blow since it registered a good occupancy on Friday and yesterday was a holiday for Mahashivratri.

When we set out to gauge the audience’s reactions on the first day we noticed that while the audience was all praise for the performances of Kangana, Shahid and Saif, they couldn’t relate to the story." A few movie buffs also opined that adding a love triangle to the Second World War and the Indian movement for Independence, created a confusing narrative. Our film critic, Khalid Mohamed echoed the same sentiment and said, "Written by Matthew Robbins, the screenplay is a designer suitcase, overpacked to such a degree that the zip keeps coming apart. Too many stories – three-and-a-half to be precise -- set around the backdrop of World War II (1939-’45) form the jumbo mumbo here."

We guess such feedback could be the reason behind the film’s dismal collections.

However, having said that, Vishal Bhardwaj’s films tend to kick-start on a dull note but pick up over time. His earlier releases such as Maqbool (2003), Omkara (2006), Kaminey (2009) and Haider (2014) are proof of the trend.

Hence, Rangoon’s first day collections cannot be testimony of its fate at the box-office. Let’s wait and watch to see if the film registers an improved performance over the weekend.
